The budget reduction would affect the Ministry of Enviroment and the National Meteorological Institute

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) warned that the millionaire budget reduction for next year will affect water quality programs and it will also reduce resources sent to other agencies such as the National Meteorological Institute (IMN).

According to the ministry, the reduction would be of 700 million colones. In the case of Water Board, items financed with resources from equity and discharges deposit would decrease.

It would directly affect strategic services including monitoring programs, studies related to quality and quantity of water, enforcing contracts with laboratories in public universities, purchase of medical equipment and research for the analysis of granting concessions and regionalization processes,

announced the Ministry in a press release.

Regarding resources at risk from IMN, these come from transfers from the Civil Aviation General Directorate (DGAC) and the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

In addition, the reduction could greatly affect the mining canon from the Directorate of Geology and Mines (DGM), which would have an influence in the development of computer systems.

In the same way, it could affect international commitments as compliance with environmental requirements due to the incorporation of Costa Rica to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Although the MINAE managesis in charge of 14 offices and manages 26.7% of the national territory, by 2017 it would receive 0.6% out of the national budget (9 billion colones).
