The government seems to ignore transport and business sectors’ problems

The transport and business situation is worrying. However, Luis Guillermo Solis’ government seems to be unaware.

The transport sector is going through its biggest crisis in years, not only for the constant traffic jams, but because the administration hasn’t been able to solve problems on that matter and Costa Rica seems to be a big bottleneck.

Political and business sectors have criticized the government’s lack of solution on issues such as sectoral plans, taxi drivers’ demands, its refusal to propose a plan to regulate Uber service and poor service of the subway.

Former Minister of Public Works (MOPT) Randall Quirós stated that the the Executive must make a decision in order to help public transport drivers or to regulate Uber services.

In relation to the train service, legislators from different parties agree that the plan to provide a modern rail system will be useless if the administration continues without a clear direction. To buy new equipment (at least 10 locomotives), to build the train to Alajuela, to provide a more continuous and better service to the user as well as the implementation of electronic payment are part of the pending tasks.

In addition, not only politicians complain about the deterioration in the transport system. The business sector is concerned about the government’s lack of actions and its negative impact on the competitiveness. For instance, it hasn’t been possible to finish or even to start great infrastructure works.
