American Expatriate Costa Rica

The ‘marchamo’ is one of Costa Rican’s favorite Christmas gifts

At Christmas, many receive a gift that might seem strange: the payment of the right of circulation or vehicle ownership tax.

According to Roger Arias, Deputy Head of the Directorate of Solidarity Insurers of INS, the number of people who pay their ‘marchamo’ shows a considerable increase after December 24th.

The official commented that there are other payment peaks, such as when people receive their Christmas bonuses and the last days of the month.

At this moment, 30% of the owners of vehicles in Costa Rica have paid the tax. That is about 424,000 people.

According to Arias, this behavior by users is rated as normal, since most owners leave the payment for the second half of December.

If you are part of the 70% of owners who have not paid the ‘marchamo’, remember to do it on time, since after December 31st you would be exposing yourself to various fines.
