U.S. Embassy says alleged military base in Liberia is “inaccurate”

Following a report from the Venezuela-based Telesur television station, the United States Embassy in Costa Rica has issued a statement that “No U.S. military troops or ships are based in Costa Rica and there is no future plan for them”. Telesur described some U.S. aircraft and military units that operate in the area from naval carriers. However, the embassy denied there was a plan to establish a military base in Liberia.

The U.S. embassy also acknowledged that the U.S. military maintains constant cooperation with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the National Guard (NG) in order to strengthen the Costa Rican police, and this cooperation comes at the request of the national authorities.
