Venezuelan jailed opposition leader Leopoldo López has rejected the possibility of being placed under house arrest, raised during a meeting with top government officials and former Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, according to his wife Lilian Tintori.
They did not ask anything to Leopoldo, they did not set any type of condition, they spoke to him about a possible measure of house arrest and the answer was: ‘I have to be the last one,'”
said Tintori.
López referred to the fact that there are other political prisoners and he believes they should be released first.
According to the politician’s wife, he asked her to clarify that there was no negotiation with Nicolás Maduro.
Leopoldo will never negotiate his freedom, the freedom of an entire country comes first,”
stressed the woman.
Rodríguez Zapatero promotes a dialogue between government and opposition to solve the serious political crisis.
As part of these attempts, both forces held talks at the end of 2016, which failed between mutual accusations of breach of agreements.
The possibility of house arrest arises in the middle of a wave of opposition protests against Maduro that have resulted in 65 dead people since April 1st.
In a video clandestinely recorded in his cell, López called to continue the peaceful protests.
