5 countries complain about Costa Rica to WTO

Last March, 5 countries complained to the World Trade Organization about Costa Rica closing its boarders to avocados. United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Ghana and Venezuela insist in that there is no scientific ground for the restriction.

The representatives from each country made interventions to explain the reasons why they think this measure should be revoked.
One of the strongest arguments is that the measure would be inconsistent with the country’s international commitments to the WTO.

The United States support Mexico’s position in this dilemma and extends the complaint to other products including onions.
The president of the Chamber of Exporters and Importers of Perishables (CEIPP), Randall Benavides, said they don’t even know why Costa Rica included Ghana and Venezuela in the list, since they are not exporting countries.
