Commission demands explanations from deputy minister due to natives’ complaints

Deputy Minister of the Presidency, Ana Gabriel Zúñiga, will have to report to the legislators of the Commission of Human Rights for complaints filed by representatives of indigenous communities.

That legislative body approved a hearing for the hierarch to refer to the issue, but the date is not defined.

Sandra Piszk, who represents the commission in the National Liberation Party (PLN), explained that Zúñiga will be asked to report on the development of “some worrying cases” on indigenous issues.

Piszk said that, for example, the deputy minister will be questioned because of the lack of communication of the Presidential House with the indigenous communities and because of complaints about violation of article 169 of the agreement with the International Labor Organization (ILO), which establishes the obligation to consult indigenous peoples regarding draft laws.

Legislator Gerardo Vargas Varela, from Frente Amplio, accused Zúñiga on February 20th for disrespecting indigenous autonomy.
