Health ministry looks into relation of Zika and a microcephaly case

The Health Ministry is investigating the link between Zika virus and a newborn with microcephaly, according a to a report released on Thursday afternoon.

This will be the first case of a child born with microcephaly caused by Zika in Costa Rica and in Central America.

The mother of the baby entered Costa Rica on April 23 from El Salvador, her country of origin. If results of Zika virus infection turn out to be positive, the woman will be the eighth imported case registered in Costa Rica.

The woman was diagnosed with the symptoms of Zika back in November 2015 in a medical center in El Salvador. By then, she was three months in pregnancy. However, the mother claimed that she wasn’t given a test to confirm Zika infection.

Besides the imported cases, there are 44 local cases, most of them located in Garabito, Jacó with 31 people affected.
