Law criminalizing domestic violence approved

On June, 14th the Congress approved an amendment to the Act on the Criminalization of Violence against Women.

The 39 legislators present at the second reading of the amendment approved it unanimously.

The reform proposed by legislator Gerardo Vargas Varela, now sets the same penalty established for fraud simulation on divorce trials. The Penal Code imposed a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for that crime, whereas the Act on the Criminalization of Violence against Women only established 3 years.
