New political party promises to fight for animals

A new political party will seek seats in Congress in 2018 and from there it will fight for the welfare of animals.

The group, called Partido Animalista San José, was formed on Tuesday and began working on the requirements to enroll in February 2017 before the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

Alejandro Fonseca, president of the party, said they will begin the process of cantonal assemblies on December 10th to culminate in provincial assembly on January 28th.

Fonseca said that the initiative emerged at the juncture of the national discussion due to the need for legislation to punish animal abuse and to involve different groups that do animalist work.

Our aim is to be the voice of the animals in the Legislature. We thank the legislators who have been supporting us, but we believe that we need more than a bill to penalize abuse, there are many other projects to improve human beings’ relationships with animals,”

said Fonseca.

The man clarified that despite being an animalist party, they will also participate in the discussion of other issues.
