Plan to declare Blue Zone in Nicoya Peninsula moves forward in Congress

The Social Affairs Committee of the Legislative Assembly affirmed a bill that seeks to declare the cantons of Nicoya, Hojancha and Nandayure as Blue Zones, as well as the administrative districts of Cóbano, Lepanto, Paquera and the Gulf Islands.

Legislator Marta Arauz, from the National Liberation Party (PLN), who is a proponent of the initiative, explained that the purpose is to guarantee the promotion, protection and maintenance of healthy lifestyles of the Special Longevity Zone.

With this, we intend to improve the quality of life for senior citizens, promoting active aging, encouraging their participation in various initiatives, whether leisure or production. It also aims to ensure that new generations adopt lifestyles that allow them to reach a longevity with health and well-being,”

said Arauz.

From November 16th to 18th, the Blue Zones World Encounter was held in Nicoya, in which a tribute was paid to the longest-lived people in this area. In addition, information on the subject was shared.

Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that the Blue Zone in Nicoya will remain for many years, since there are more than 900 people over 90 years old and more than five thousand inhabitants with more than 75 years old. Several sectors have advised of the potential and cultural value of the region.
