Country to host world meeting of the populations with the longest lives

September 18, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica will host a global meeting in which representatives of five places will meet with the oldest people in the world.

There are five internationally recognized blue zones. The Nicoya peninsula stands out among them.

The people with the highest life expectancy live in these areas, since people there develop an active old age.

The blue zones are Icaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Okinanawa in Japan, Loma Linda in the United States and Nicoya in Costa Rica.

According to the Ministry of Health, in Nicoya there are more than 5 thousand people older than 75 years old. Almost nine-hundred of them are 90 to 100 years old; and by November they expect to have about 50 people over 100 years old.

The meeting will be held in Nicoya from November 16th to 18th, aiming to strengthen the protective factors of this population.
