After testing a baby with microcephaly for Zika and getting negative results, the medical personal carried out a second study to completely discard the virus presence.
A sample of spinal fluid was extracted by syringe from the newborn. The results will be ready by Monday, reported Rodrigo Marín, National Coordinator of Infectious Vectors for the Health Ministry.
About the new study, Marín foresees it would also turn out to be a negative result.
The newborn’s mother comes from El Salvador where she was diagnosed with similar symptoms of Zika while being pregnant for 10 weeks. However, the woman claims that she didn’t get a test to confirm Zika virus.
The Costa Rican Health Ministry requested to health autorities in El Salvador information to prove the woman ever had Zika.
“For the time being, we do not have proofs that the mother ever had Zika, that’s why it can’t be determined that the newborn has microcephaly due this virus”, Marin said.
