A week ago, there were taxi drivers’ demonstrations in several parts of Costa Rica. A meeting between the Regulatory Authority of Public Services (ARESEP) and taxi drivers was planned, but it was canceled. As consequence, threats of new demonstrations are becoming stronger.
Taxi drivers declared that they will return to the streets, but this time they won’t announce when it will ocur. On August 9th, security forces were in places such as La Fuente de la Hispanidad and La Galera, and they detained and arrested dozens of people and they also confiscated several taxis.
There will be a larger strike, but we won’t say a word: you will only live it,
warned Rubén Vargas, member of the National Union of Taxi Drivers.
This situation does not worry president Luis Guillermo Solís, who seems to be prepared for everything, even though he hasn’t mentioned his plan if the demonstrations take place. According to Sergio Alfaro, minister of the Presidency, to say a word about that matter, would jeopardize any planned operation.
