Carlos Alvarado orders repatriation of child abandoned in the US

June 21, 2018 by Staff News Writer

President Carlos Alvarado said on Thursday that the news about a Costa Rican boy who was abandoned in the Arizona desert, in the border with the United States, filled him with anguish. Therefore he ordered the institutions involved in his attention to prioritize the case to expedite his return to Costa Rica.

He added that the news invites the government and the country to improve better conditions in the national economy and create more jobs. Lack of employment and opportunities are the main reasons that motivate immigrants to leave their countries.

The attention of the minor’s case is in the hands of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Costa Rican consulate in the city of Los Angeles, and the National Board of Children (PANI).

This Thursday it became known that the United States immigration authorities found the six-yeard-old child without water or food in the middle of the dessert at a temperature of 37°C. The minor was rescued by United States immigration agents at a point identified as Luckeville, just north of the border line, in an area classified as the most dangerous on the border between the US and Mexico.

The boy indicated to the agents that he was left in that place by one of his uncles, who asked him to continue his journey alone, because “at some point he would be rescued.” Apparently, the child was taken there with the intention of reuniting him with his mother, who lives irregularly in a US city that was not revealed.
