¢470 million for electronic devices to monitor convicts

July 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Ministry of Justice and Peace (MJP) will allocate ¢ 470 million from its resources for the operation of electronic devices to monitor inmates, after $1 million provided by the World Bank for this purpose were allocated for the construction of 2 prison modules.

This budget could increase over time, depending on the demand for the devices.

In addition, the institution will also create a Monitoring Unit, consisting of 10 to 12 people, some of which are already within the prison system.

One hundred devices will start operating in September this year -64 of which are already assigned by order of a judge-, after authorities consider the proposals made by Radiográfica Costarricense (RACSA) and Empresa de Servicios Públicos de Heredia (ESPH).

The device was initially intended for inmates who posed a low risk for society. We will wait to see their behavior. After all, these decisions are made by judges,”

said Alejandro Redondo, chief clerk of the MJP.
