14 confirmed zika cases in the first week of January

January 19, 2017 by Staff News Writer

There is no truce with Zika. Only in the first week of 2017 were 14 new cases of the virus confirmed in the country.

The previous year ended with 1,649 affected patients, 150 of which were pregnant women, but only 40 completed their pregnancies.

Data from the Ministry of Health reported 88 possible cases, but until Wednesday 22 of them had been ruled out 22.

In 2016, the year in which the virus came to the country, we saw the worst sequels: 2 children were born with microcephaly and 4 people remained with some neurological syndrome, such as the Guillain Barré syndrome.

Dengue and chikungunya also continue attacking the population, although both viruses come with fewer affected patients compared to the first week of 2016.

While last year 317 cases of chikungunya were reported, 2017 is starting with 13 cases. In the case of dengue, 2016 reported 924 cases in its first week and this year only 106 cases have been confirmed.
