2018 inflation was within Central Bank’s target range

The inflation estimated by means of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) got to the end of 2018 at 2.03%, a figure that is within the target range established by the Central Bank, between 2% and 4%.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), the variation of the general price level (between January and December) was lower compared to 2017, when it reached 2.57%.

The inflation of the last month of the year was 0.21%. During December, the goods and services that showed the greatest positive effect were: tour packages, subscription television, and Internet service.

On the other hand, gasoline, air tickets and liquefied gas were some of the goods with the greatest negative effect.

Of the 315 goods and services that made up the consumer basket, 57% increased in price, 32% decreased in price and 11% did not change.

Of the twelve groups that make up the index, ten increased in price. Only Housing and Transportation Rental reported negative variations (-0.21% and -1.68%, respectively).

In the last ten years, the highest annual variation occurred in 2010 with 5.82%; while in 2015 had the only negative annual variation (-0.81%).
