Movimiento Libertario must pay ¢ 209 million for fraud with training

November 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Chamber of Criminal Cassation declared the appeal filed by the Libertarian Movement Party to be nullified, so the group must pay ¢209 million, plus ¢67 million more for interest.

The Libertarian Movement was convicted in the middle of a criminal proceeding for the crime of fraud against the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), since they charged a series of trainings that never took place.

On October 23rd, 2015, the first sentence against the political group was issued by the Criminal Court of San José. At that time, the former libertarian vice president, Ronaldo Alfaro, was sentenced to eight years in prison and the former secretary of training, Carlos Solano, to three years.

The Court of Appeals confirmed Alfaro and Solano’s responsibility in the crime, however, in the new trial what they want is to define, again, the number of years of prison for each defendant.
