21% of plants could disappear

May 25, 2016 by Staff News Writer

21% of the world’s plants are endangered, according to the first global census of plants in the botanical center Kew Gardens in London.

According to Professor Kathy Willis, scientific director of the Royal Botanic Kew Gardens,

We already had a report on the global status of birds, sea turtles and even parents. But, despite its great importance, we were still waiting for a report on plants. Now we have it.”

More than 391,000 species of vascular plants have been surveyed in the report “State of the plants in the world”, a figure that could increase because 2,000 new plants are discovered every year, mainly in Brazil, Australia and China.

According to the report, the main threat to plants comes from agriculture, construction, diseases and pesticides.
