4.7-degree earthquake shook the north of Guanacaste

January 17, 2018 by Staff News Writer

In the north of Guanacaste the ground continues to move relentlessly. After the seismic swarms reported last week, this Wednesday, the National Seismological Network (RSN) registered a new earthquake.

The telluric movement occurred at 5:40 a.m. and it had a magnitude of 4.7 degrees. The epicenter was located 11 kilometers southeast of Bijagua, in Upala de Alajuela. The tremor’s depth was around four kilometers.

According to the RSN, the movement was felt strongly in Guatuso and Arenal and lightly in Canaleta de Upala.

The origin was in a fault located in the Caribbean plate.

An analysis made by that same entity also indicated that last week, in the Central Pacific, there were 11 earthquakes with magnitudes greater than five degrees.

On January 11th, three of them happened, generated by local faults in the vicinity of Tenorio Volcano. The remaining two took place offshore on January 16th: the first (magnitude 5.0) 11 km south of Esterillos in Puntarenas, and the second (magnitude 5.9) 90 km west of Conchal in Guanacaste… The latter originated directly from the process of subduction of the Coco plate,”

quoted the RSN.
