60% of Burn Unit in Children’s Hospital is full

January 19, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The amount of burned children unfortunately increases each day. The National Children’s Hospital (HNN) reports 60% of the beds of the Burned Unit are full.

Hot liquids incidents continue to occupy the first place, according to Carlos Jiménez, deputy director of the medical center, who said that precisely on Tuesday they received a 3-year old from Goicoechea, burned with hot coffee.

According to the doctor, such situations usually occur around bathtime, at lunchtime and in the afternoon with coffee, especially with children under 3 years old.

60% of the burns we normally take are from hot liquids. This is a typical example of the impact of hot liquids on a child. Fortunately, in this case the child only suffered burns in 3% of his body, but there are children who suffer in much more sensitive areas,”

added Jiménez.

In 2016, 410 children suffered burns, the second highest figure reported since 2006.
