70% of companies will keep their payroll in the first quarter

January 25, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Seventy percent of Costa Rican companies plans to keep their payroll intact during the first three months of the year and 22% plans to increase it, according to estimates by the Institute of Economic Sciences Research at the University of Costa Rica.

The pattern is stable. We are talking about permanent employees,”

said Gabriela González, a researcher.

The sectors that have the highest expectations of hiring are agriculture, construction and services.

In general we have more positive expectations for all sectors,”

added the researcher.

According to the survey of employers, micro and small enterprises report recruitment plans almost three percentage points higher than large companies.

Those who do not plan to increase the payroll claim there has been an increase in the costs of fuels, electricity, social charges and production inputs.

In addition, more than half of employers (54%) expect the exchange rate to increase in the coming months, especially agricultural entrepreneurs (60%), services providers (57%) and manufacturers (56%).

For this quarter, most entrepreneurs expect to maintain the level of profits they have recorded in previous quarters.

The survey used to get this data was conducted between November 7th and 25th to 451 managers and business owners.
