19 months without ambassador in Venezuela

October 27, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The government has one year and seven months without appointing an ambassador to the government of Venezuela, despite the political, social and economic crisis in the South American country.

The press office of Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that the country has no ambassador in Caracas.

Ana Patricia Villalobos is the one responsible for the diplomatic functions.

On March 25th, 2015, the Government fired Ambassador Federico Picado, after a series of controversial statements regarding the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

Picado said, among other things, that in Venezuela there is freedom of press and that commodity shortages are attempts to destabilize Maduro’s regime.

The diplomat was then dismissed and President Luis Guillermo Solís insisted that his statements did not reflect the official views of Costa Rican Government.

To date the Executive has not replaced Picado.

Foreign Ministry said they have reasons for not having appointed anyone.

The news come at a critical time for Venezuela, when the Costa Rican Legislature and former Presidents of the Republic have asked Solís to act firmly.
