US warship collided in the Panama Canal

November 2, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) reported on November 1st that US combat ship USS Montgomery suffered an incident, which didn’t affected the activities or structure of the Canal.

The mishap occurred when the warship was transiting through the locks of Pedro Miguel en route to the Pacific side.

The ACP explained that the incident did not affect the transit’ schedule so the ship completed its passage through the waterway.

The Canal’s authorities pointed out that since December 31st, 1999, when the Panama Canal began to be operated by Panamanian authorities, the transit insurance indicators have improved, and the customer’s confidence is increasing as the waterway handles larger vessels.

According to official information, the rate of incidents in the waterway has registered its lowest levels, with an average of 0.1% among the nearly 14,000 transits per year.
