A bill aims to promote Creolé as official language

November 2, 2016 by Staff News Writer

With the aim of promoting the values and recognition of the languages spoken by different ethnic groups in Costa Rica, legislators from Limón Commission are driving bill 19,969.

The initiative is entitled “For the celebration and incorporation of educational and cultural activities under the recognition of the Creole language”.

According to Danny Hayling Carcache, liberationist legislator and member of the commission, for several months this project has been promoted from his office with the help of René Zúñiga, educator at the National University of Costa Rica (UNA).

I think we have culturally lagged the language we speak: limón’s Creolé, and I hope that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture promote August 30th as the Limón’s Creolé Day,”

declared the legislator.

Hayling stated that language is part of people’s cultural heritage and it deserves special attention from the state to preserve it and strengthen it.

In Costa Rica, the limón’s Creole is a language spoken in the province of Limón and people from the Caribbean. As for its history, this is related to the immigration of African people to the area and their participation in railway construction.
