The Community Development Program is changing lives

November 3, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Lidia Hernández’s ranch has changed radically in the last 12 months. A full and technological transformation has been remarkable over 4 hectares of land located in Guácimo.

The changes started when the Community Development Program from the EARTH University took place and now Lidia has great revenues. For instance, her profits doubled.

I teach them what I know and they explain to me new techniques. We never stop experimenting and learning together. The knowledge they have given me is beautiful and the results are very important,

declared Hernández.

Among the environmentally-sustainable changes, an organic greenhouse was built, as well as a digester and chickens started to be raised.

In addition, Hernández has planted products as lettuce, cucumber, tomato, cilantro, hearts of palm, banana and corn. She has also worked with mango, cassava, yams and several herbs. In addition, students taught Hernández to produce milk and cheese from her cows.

Young people share ideas and goals for the farm design and they have developed a business plan alongside Hernández. Students even work in the field to implement the initiatives.
