Daniel Ortega won the Nicaraguan elections

November 8, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) officially announced the re-election of president of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega who won in Sunday’s election with 72.5% of votes. In addition, his wife, Rosario Murillo, will be Vice President of the Republic. 42.8% of the electorate refused to vote.

According to official data, Ortega was favored by 1,803,944 votes, while Rodríguez, his main rival, won the support of 373,230 citizens.

These results are irreversible.

Before reading these first results, thousands of supporters of President Ortega and Murillo took to the streets and squares of Managua to celebrate their victory.

Ortega was the favorite to get his third consecutive, fourth term and, this time, with his influential wife, aspiring to the vice presidency, in a process questioned due to the absence of the main opposition party and the international observation.

Prior to the reading of the first results, Democratic leaders of Frente Amplio (FAD), the main opposition in Nicaragua, declared that they will not recognize the results of this “electoral farce and constitutional fraud”.

4.34 million Nicaraguans were invited to elect a president, a vice president, 90 legislators to the National Assembly and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament.
