Firefighter for a day: a child’s dream come true

November 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

If there is anything that the fire department doesn’t want to put out is Derek’s smile, a 10-year- old boy from Pavas. Almost 2 years ago, he survived a AK-47 shooting.

The child was injured when unknown people repeatedly shot at his home. As an innocent victim, he was shot twice in the chest and abdomen.

As a true fighter, the child recovered and survived. However, 13 operations were required to continue his struggle.

On November 12th, the Costa Rican Fire Department decided to fulfill the child’s dream, who longs to be a firefighter to save lives.

Hector Chaves, director of that entity, declared that they did a tribute to Derek and one of his friends. They were taken to several stations in San José and they had lunch at Pavas station.

The institution knew Aabout Derek’s dream of becoming a firefighter and they did not hesitate to do everything they could to make it true.

We took a happy tour in Barrio Luján station. Then we took him to the academy, he heard a talk on prevention, he practiced with hoses and put out a small fire that we prepared for him. His parents and relatives were also part of the process,

declared Chaves.

Despite multiple operations, the child must still go through several processes to try to continue with his regular life. At the moment, he lives among medicines, hospitals and scars.

According to Chaves, they will not hesitate to continue with these actions that motivate other minors to succeed in spite of adversity.
