Will Donald Trump renegotiate the Free Trade Agreement with Mexico, Canada and Central America?

November 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

During his electoral campaign, Donald Trump declared that he would renegotiate the Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada, a situation that turned the alarm about the possibility that the FTA with Central America and the Dominican Republic could also be part of that proposal.

Can authorities renegotiate the FTA with Central America? What points should be changed and what should remain the same? What products would be affected in import and export? How could the Costa Rican economy be affected?

All these questions come to light; however, the competent authorities are emphatic that it would be an speculation to give an answer, it would even be irresponsible, because it is unknown what the new US president will do once he takes office on January 20th.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade Jhon Fonseca declared that although there is a NAFTA renegotiation clause, it seems to be a very remote possibility.

According to Fonseca, what Costa Rica and its different sectors should do is to analyze what might come once Donald Trump takes office.

In the National Chamber of Agriculture, authorities are relaxed. It thinks that people are exaggerating on what can happen with Trump in the power.

Authorities do not think that exports could be affected, they still need to see the work plan that the new president wants to implement.
