TicoPooling: an app that aims to reduce traffic jams

November 15, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Francis travels every day from Mercedes Sur in Heredia to his work in Escazú. The journey can take up to 3 endless hours among bus changes, smoke, stress and time that will never be back … So it is not surprising that Francis complains almost every day with his friend and co-worker Marino Umaña.

Both are engineers; So they looked for ways to do more than talking about the problem of traffic jam. As consequence, TicoPooling was born: an app that aims to end cars with a single occupant in Costa Rica.

The application allows users to create a profile to ask for a ride and it also allows to offer free seats in your vehicle. By doing this, two people who travel, for example, from San Pedro to San José center can agree through the application to make the travel together. In addition, by doing this, fewer cars will be on the road.

Users just need to download the application, create a profile and establish if they are travelers or drivers that offer free seats. TicoPooling asks you to define what your regular travels are in order to connect you with users who do similar tours.

Although there are already other sites that offer “carpooling” in the country, TicoPooling is the first one to offer a mobile application. However, it is currently available only to Android platform users. Those who have iOS and Windows systems can use the program at www.ticopooling.com

The application is free and so is the service: its goal is that Costa Ricans learn to share the spaces that they do not use in their vehicles to ease traffic congestions.
