Nicaragua started the evacuations and declared a state of alert

November 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Nicaragua is getting ready for the evacuation of coastal communities and two islands in the southern Caribbean due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Otto on Wednesday or Thursday.

Evacuations must be carried out and this must be done in the better way,

said Guillermo González, from the National System of Prevention, Mitigation and Disaster Relief (SINAPRED) after arriving at the Caribbean port of Bluefields.

Evacuations will take place in the coastal communities and shallow areas of the bay of the port of Bluefields, which is the head of Nicaragua’s southern Caribbean.

González also explained that the Navy will help to transport the population and tourists from Little Corn Island to Corn Island, where shelters are settled.

The most important thing is to guard human life,

concluded González.

President Daniel Ortega ordered to declare a state of alert in the South Caribbean and in the departments of Chontales, Boaco, Rivas, Central Zelaya and Río San Juan, which are located in central and southern Nicaragua.
