Domestic violence could have caused fire in Tibás

November 28, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The rage of a man after a fight with his partner may have been the cause of the fire in Leo XIII, in Tibás. Four people died as consequence of it.

At least this is the authorities’ preliminary version, after carrying out the first investigations in the sector of Garabito, where the incident occurred.

Around 300 people lost their homes. Officially, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) reported that the reasons for the incident are unclear.

However, the Public Force arrested a subject who is being investigated, because the neighbors maintain that because  of an argument with his partner, the man caused the fire.

Another cause could be an electrical overload that was generated in one of the shacks of the slum area. Last week, firefighters had to visit the area twice for that reason.

About 70 shacks, in which 200 adults and 94 children used to live, were affected. They are now in 2 municipal shelters. The fire consumed the shacks in 90 minutes.
