Rosario Murillo: hurricane did not kill or wound people in Nicaragua

November 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Hurricane Otto partially or totally destroyed more than 800 homes, eight schools, two health centers and several governmental offices during its passage through southern Nicaragua last Thursday. However, the Nicaraguan government said there were no casualties or injured people.

First Lady Rosario Murillo said the damage occurred in the Southern Caribbean, in Central Zelaya, Río San Juan and Rivas departments, where authorities have distributed sheeting to cover the roofs of the houses affected.

1,700 linear meters of collapsed power lines are also reported, aswell as partial damage to the forest reserve of the department of Río San Juan de Nicaragua.

Otto did not cause deaths or injuries in Nicaragua, because the government evacuated 11,678 people from 73 communities in the southeastern and south regions of the country, 248 of which are still in shelters, according to a spokesman.

Otto crossed the San Juan River, which marks the border with Costa Rica, where it left at least 10 people dead, an unspecified number of missing people and thousands of victims.
