No more ash! Turrialba keeps plume of gases and steam

December 9, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Since Thursday, Turrialba Volcano is no longer emanating ash and the plume only shows gases and steam.

Eliécer Duarte, an expert from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), reported that the seismic signal from the colossus fell back to a period of stability, as it happened days ago, when it spent more than 3 weeks without emanating ash.

The seismic signal indicates that the ash fall ceased. There are no reports of ashfall anywhere. But it can resume its activity at any moment,”

said Duarte, who also explained that the plume of gases and steam is white, but if it turns gray, it is because it is emanating ash.
