December 12th marked day number 252 of 100% renewable electricity consumption in 2016. The last time oil was used to support electricity demand in Costa Rica was on October 6th.

This was revealed by data from the National Energy Control Center (CENCE) of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).

Thus, Costa Rica ends with a balance of 98.12% of power generation from clean sources. The remaining percentage is due to the fact that last April was the driest month of the last 2 years, which forced thermal generation.

Our projections show that renewable generation will remain stable for 2017. We will have 4 new wind plants, plus we expect favorable hydro-meteorological conditions in the basins that feed our plants,”

said Carlos Manuel Obregón, CEO of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).

Costa Rica uses five renewable sources to produce electricity: water (74.35%), geothermal energy (12.74%), wind (10.30%), biomass (0.72%) and solar energy (0.01%). The thermal source is a backup.

Generally, the National Electric System (SEN) uses the greater availability of wind and biomass during dry seasons to guarantee sustainable renewable generation.
