Rice grower chained himself in front of the Assembly to protest

December 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

In protest against the government, a rice grower from Bagaces chained himself in front of the main entrance of the Legislative Assembly, demanding industries to receive the harvest.

Bryan Alpízar said his father is a rice grower and that he had problems delivering the harvest, “just like many other producers nationwide.”

Accompanied by his relatives, Alpízar said that he will not leave until he is given assurances that the industries will receive the product.

My father was told that there was only room for imported rice, meaning they put aside domestic production because imports are a priority,”

claimed the man.

Alpízar also demands industries to pay for the product according to the law because they pay what they feel like; and reiterated that producers do not have the support of the directors of the National Rice Corporation (CONARROZ) or the Government.

Rudy Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly of Rice Producers, said the protest has the support of the organization.

Rodríguez also said that about 15,000 sacks of rice are in danger if the industries don’t take them and that more than 700 producers are also being affected.
