Costa Rica is news in many of the most prestigious media worldwide.

Forbes, the world’s most influential business magazine, BBC World, La Vanguardia, and other media highlighted Costa Rica as a green country because much of its electricity is produced from renewable or clean sources.

During 2016, Costa Rica spent more than 250 days using electricity from renewable sources.

A year earlier, in 2015, 98.12% of the electricity used by Costa Rican also came from non-polluting sources.

That is, for about two-thirds of the year, this country of almost five million people did not require fossil fuel at all to generate electricity,”

wrote BBC World.

Forbes also highlighted the hydroelectric mega-project Reventazón, built by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE). Reventazón produces electricity equivalent to the consumption of 525,000 households.

For this reason, La Vanguardia published the article “Costa Rica, about to get 100% of all its energy from renewable sources.”

Consulted by BBC Mundo, Paul Ekins, professor of natural resources and environment at University College of London, said that

Costa Ricans are more aware of their environmental assets.”

What you need to do is look for ways to integrate mind and quality of life into our environment (…) The problem is that industrial societies have the perception that environmental policy represents a blow to the economy and we are gradually moving away from this idea,”

added Elkins.

This year ICE will start operations in 4 new wind plants.
