President Solís condemns call for general strike

January 11, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Government convened the bill that limits wage bonuses, which was sent to special sessions of the Legislature. This action angered union groups in the country, some of whom have even talked about a general strike to protest.

The Executive Branch clarifies that calling for a strike is unnecessary because there are other ways, such as dialogue, to try and reach an agreement among all sectors.

Luis Guillermo Solís condemns any call for a general strike, since he believes that in a democracy, the most important thing is the principle of discussing matters of interest.

The Government did not convene the bill for public employment when they sent the decree. However, Solís later changed his mind and announced last week that he would convene it this week.

The President emphasized that all groups have the opportunity to express their opinions, exposing the pros and cons, same as the legislators in the Congress.

This wage bill to regulate bonuses is vital for the Assembly to start the discussion on taxes. That was one of the conditions given by the fraction of the National Liberation Party.
