12 lawyers could be taking drugs to San Sebastián prison

January 12, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The authorities of the Ministry of Justice are investigating at least 12 lawyers suspected of taking drugs to San Sebastián prison.

On Tuesday, a lawyer named Navarrete Alvarado was arrested with 150 grams of marijuana inside her vagina, intended for three prisoners.

Mariano Barrantes, director of Social Adaptation, said he has been on the trail of some professionals because precisely after their meeting with inmates, drugs, cell phones and other items are confiscated.

While items are constantly seized in the cells, visitors manage to put things to in the vaginal or rectal tracks, hampering the work of the police.

The inmates receive the substance from the person who visits them and use the same means to try to take it to other places. Before attending an ordinary, intimate or attorney visit, you are subjected to body search by law, and once the visit is over, you are searched again,”

said the official.

Barrantes said it’s hard to believe that professionals, who are supposed to be law abiding, put themselves in such situations.

Following what happened with Alvarado, the Bar Association initiated an ex officio investigation to determine if there are more professionals involved, as is suspected.

Juan León, an attorney from the Bar Association, explained that there is a penalty for each wrongful behavior from a lawyer, ranging from months to years.

Alvarado was suspended last September (for yet unknown reasons) for a period of 4 months that ended on Wednesday. Therefore, during this time she could not exercise her profession. However, the woman went to the prison as a lawyer, a situation that is now being investigated.
