Protest in front of Assembly for road violence

February 1, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Next Thursday, civil society groups will demonstrate peacefully in front of the Legislative Assembly against road violence.

The demonstration will take place after the death of three cyclists in Curridabat last Sunday. The three sportsmen were hit by a driver in a black Mustang.

The groups will demand the implementation of 10 actions as soon as possible:

1. Addressing the problem of road violence as a priority and as a State policy.
2. Rigor and impartiality from judges when applying existing laws.
3. Promoting the necessary changes in legislation to ensure the right of citizens to move freely and safely across all public roads in all possible means of transportation.
4. Swiftest approval possible for the bills on mobility, pedestrians and cyclists in the Legislative Assembly.
5. Promotion of a greater road surveillance at all times and throughout the national territory through random police controls and automatic speed control devices.
6. Safe and inclusive infrastructure for the most vulnerable groups (pedestrians and cyclists).
7. Focusing all necessary efforts in moral values instruction and road training at all levels of education.
8. Legal, psychological and physiotherapeutic support to victims and their relatives from the entire state health system.
9. Support from the Central Government and the municipalities.
10. Encouraging the creation of reliable national statistical and research centers.
