No more homework? A Legislator proposed to eliminate assignments and extraclasses

February 7, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Legislator from Partido Accesibilidad Sin Exclusión (PASE) Óscar López proposed to put an end to homeworks, extraclass work and assignments maintained by the Costa Rican educational system and which, according to him, only generate stress and disturbances in the family environment of the students.

It is a revolutionary initiative, but it is scientifically supported even by studies from the World Health Organization (WHO) that has scientifically deepened in the subject, assuring that there is no proof that this type of tasks increase the students’ academic knowledge,

declared the legislator.

According to him, homeworks and extra classes violate aspects of the family union, increases the students and parents’ stress, many of which are always in a hurry to make the homeworks with their children.

He explained that there are countries that have dared to take the step to eliminate this type of work, such as Finland, which is at the forefront in education, and others that have followed this initiative such as Chile, France and even the State of California in the United States.

López said that other countries such as South Korea, Japan and Colombia are carrying out this discussion and Costa Rica cannot be left behind.

The initiative can cause controversy, however, the legislator considers that the measure will have a direct impact on the quality of life of students and their families, considering that many of the work that is done today can be carried out in schools.
