Attention, ladies! Tips to reduce heart attack risk

February 22, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Each February, the United States make a call to protect the heart and prevent more than 600,000 deaths each year.

For 2017, the Heart Health Program from the Health System Mount Sinai in New York City launched 5 tips for women to reduce their risk of suffering a heart attack.

1. Stress test: Ten years after menopause, women should think about having an annual stress test, especially if they have a family history of heart disease or obesity. Doctors also recommend this test if you want to start a strong exercise program or if you have chest pressure or shortness of breath when walking uphill.

2. Meditate: Reduce levels of emotional stress through exercise, meditation, or yoga. Emotional stress is a cardiac risk factor that affects women more than men. It is estimated that stress increases the possibility of having a coronary problem by 27%. This is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes a day.

3. Recognize the symptoms: The symptoms of a heart attack in women are different from those of men. Women may experience sickness, pain in the jaw, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue.

4. Limit your alcohol intake: Although a little alcohol can promote good cholesterol, excess alcohol has serious consequences. High consumption can lead to an enlarged heart, heart rhythm disorders and a higher risk of stroke.

5. If you travel…: During the flights, drink plenty of water and move your legs as much as possible to reduce the risk of blood clots.
