Calderón Guardia Hospital is full

February 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The emergency service in Calderón Guardia Hospital is full of patients. They assure they are working at full capacity and therefore, officials recommend having the nearest peripheral clinics as your first options.

Donald Corella, head of the service, said that the hospital was already full before receiving many patients this weekend.

The doctor added that despite being busy, the service is operating normally.

This medical center receives between 350 and 400 emergencies per day.

Last year, 5.7 million patients were treated in the emergency services of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), about 290 thousand more than in 2015. However, the number could be higher, because revaluations (2 or 3 per patient) are not in the records.

CCSS data indicate that 22.4% of the care in these services ended in observation and 61% were not real emergencies.
