The National Fishery Sector is requesting regulations on needlefish species

February 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The National Fishery Sector is requesting a new rule so that needlefish are regulated in Costa Rican territory.

According to the Costa Rican Fisheries Federation (FECOP), these species are key pieces to tourism and sport fishing, but they are affected by vessels that use other types of fishing.

In addition, the sale of billfish or sailfish became a major global problem that even made the United States Congress submit an amendment to the US Fisheries Conservation Act, which regulates and protect them.

Unfortunately there is no law to protect these species in Costa Rica,

said the entity that expects the new American regulations to encourage the promotion of new rules on this matter in the region.
