3 new jails to be inaugurated this year

March 15, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Justice announced the progress in the construction of three penitentiary centers, which will be inaugurated in 2017.

San Rafael de Alajuela, Pérez Zeledón and Pococí are the locations for these jails, which will be called Integral Care Units.

The three new structures have a value of 66 million dollars.

Building prisons is expensive and all Costa Ricans pay for it,”

said Marco Feoli, deputy minister of Justice, during the press conference after the Governing Council.

According to Feoli, a penitentiary center has not been built in Costa Rica since 1999, and this has been a major backlash in the country’s penitentiary system.

The new center in San Rafael de Alajuela will house 704 inmates, the one of Pérez Zeledón will have capacity for 246 prisoners and the one in Pococí has capacity for 640 people.

In addition, work is under way on the remodeling of areas D and F of La Reforma, which has a value of more than 1,100 million colones.
