In 3 months there were more femicides than in all of 2016

March 30, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The National Institute of Women (INAMU) reported that in just three months there have been eight femicides in the country, an aspect that worries the authorities, since in all of 2016 the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) only registered seven cases.

Concern increases after a 16-year-old woman died last week at the hands of her 42-year-old partner in Guápiles. In addition, in San Sebastián, a man shot at his partner. She survived thanks to the intervention of her son, who also was shot. Both victims recover in a medical center.

However, 94% of complaints of violence against women are dismissed.

Judge Doris Arias, from the Criminal Cassation Chamber did not hide her concern about the impunity of the law on gender violence.

According to Arias, the Judiciary has made efforts to obtain an adequate reception of the complaint, but only 6.1% of cases reach final instances.

Similarly, Arias believes that criminal law is not the solution to the conflict of violence against women, but penalties must be there because victims are still present.
