RSN reports aftershocks on Sunday afternoon

April 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

After the strong earthquake of 5.8 degrees on the border between Costa Rica and Panama, the National Seismological Network (RSN) reported – at least – 2 replicas of considerable intensity after the main telluric movement.

One of them was registered at 6:36 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.9. It had a depth of 15 kilometers. The epicenter was 46 kilometers east of Sabalito de Coto Brus, that is, very close to where the strongest movement occurred.

The other replica occurred at 7:01 p.m., with a magnitude 2.7 degrees. The epicenter was located 40 kilometers east of Sabalito. In the same place as the earthquake that occurred at 5:54 p.m.

Although the epicenter was in Panamanian territory, the tremor was perceived in much of the Costa Rican territory.

Its origin was a local fault. Precisely, the border area between Costa Rica and Panama is characterized by a constant seismic activity.
