President Solís responds to Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister

April 20, 2017 by Staff News Writer

President Luis Guillermo Solís was firm in his response to the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Delcy Rodríguez, who said the document signed by Costa Rica and 10 other Latin American countries was a “rude interference”. The document blamed the Venezuelan government for the death of civilians and also asked to define the dates for the elections.

The country’s official described these countries as a “pathetic example of human rights”. Rodríguez used Twitter to express her annoyance.

The Costa Rican president responded to these statements, indicating that the document should be placed in the context of what is happening in that country.

The opinion of Ms. Rodríguez is one that must be placed in the context of a government that is being […] intensely criticized by the international community over its actions, which do violate human rights… Instead of name-calling those who have pointed out these actions, the Venezuelan government should be trying to correct them,”

said Solís in response to Rodríguez.

The political crisis in Venezuela has worsened in recent weeks, mainly after the Supreme Court gave a self-coup by removing powers from Parliament. In addition, the decision was made to ban Henrique Capriles from holding public office for 15 years.

These situations generated demonstrations in the streets that already claimed the lives of 7 people.
