Airlines in dispute for flights between Costa Rica and EE. UU.

April 20, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The US airline Southwest notified the United States Department of Transportation of its objection to Volaris Costa Rica flying to the United States with the privileges granted to Costa Rican stock companies.

This procedure responds to the interest by Volaris – a Costa Rican company with Mexican capital- of flying to Houston, Los Angeles and New York.

Southwest argues that Volaris Costa Rica does not belong to and is not controlled by Costa Ricans, as required by the existing agreement with the United States.

According to the American company, the idea of Volaris is to use the Costa Rican flag to avoid the limitations recently imposed on flights between Mexico and the United States.

The American airline also claims that Costa Ricans do not hold strategic positions within the company, which they interpret as a way for Mexicans to make decisions about the operation in both places.

Southwest also reported this objection to representatives of other US airlines such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, FedEx and JetBlue Airways.

Asked about Southwest’s position, Volaris legal director Jaime Pous said that he cannot refer to the case yet, as it is an ongoing process.
